Don't waste money! Mold Illness and Home Testing
xxxChronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (AKA Mold Illness) is expensive. Don't waste money in your mold illness journey on home testing that is not evidence-based. I've made all of the costly mistakes for you and am here to help you navigate CIRS in a way that conserves time, energy, and resources. Most of us think our homes could not be water damaged if we don't have visible mold or musty smells, but the harsh reality is even new build homes can be water damaged! While newer homes are often safer, this is not always true. For instance, materials used in the building process may have been water damaged leading to elevated mycotoxins in the building. We never want to make assumptions about something as serious as our health. If we have CIRS or EM, I always recommend testing home, school, and work environments. The good news is the best testing does not involve an expensive home inspection. In fact, we want to avoid that as run-of-the-mill mold professionals often don't understand the intricacies of CIRS. A HERTSMI test is the most evidence-based way to determine if a building is safe for a person who has a diagnosis of CIRS. You can even complete the HERTSMI testing yourself with a simple swiffer-like dust cloth! I know, this sounds too good to be true. CIRS is not an easy disease process, but I sure like to hit the "easy button" when I can. Lis Biotech provides easy to follow instructions on how to complete the HERTSMI, so you can be confident that results are accurate. We are looking for a HERTSMI score of 10 or less to indicate an environment is safe. We aren't looking for a sterile environment. No environment is mold free, but we do want your home to be "safe enough"...a HERTSMI of 10 or less means the home is likely safe enough. The closer the score is to zero the better! Ideally you should do an individual HERTSMI test of each level of the home. The HERTSMI test is most accurate for areas around 500 square feet or less. If you have a 3,000 square foot home on one level, you will likely benefit from purchasing multiple tests and testing your home in sections. A CIRS savvy indoor environmental professional (IEP) can guide you further given your particular home's unique structure. "Step 1" of Dr Shoemaker's Protocol that treats CIRS is "Removal from exposure to water damaged buildings". If we don't accomplish this first step, the unfortunate reality is you won't get well. Removal from exposure is the hardest and most important step. If you do see that your HERTSMI is elevated (AKA- greater than 10), don't freak out and run out and hire a local remediator. Instead work with a CIRS savvy IEP to create a game plan for the most cost effective way to get your home "safe enough." Trust me when I say, this advise will save you massive time, energy, and money. The only thing more heartbreaking than an elevated HERTSMI is a worsened HERTSMI post-remediation because the remediator did not understand the challenges of remediating for a CIRS patient.
